The Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership is excited to welcome the 2027 Soil Health Leadership Program (SHLP) cohort. This group of 25 participants represents the diversity of Illinois agriculture, bringing together farmers, conservation professionals, agronomists, researchers, technical service providers, and agricultural advisors from across the state. These participants will spend the next 18 months deepening their understanding of soil health and exploring strategies that support healthy soils, clean water, and profitable farms.
This year’s cohort spans a wide range of agricultural experiences and perspectives. Participants work in county Soil and Water Conservation Districts, agricultural consulting, research institutions, agribusiness, conservation organizations, and on farms of all sizes. Some have decades of experience implementing practices such as no-till, cover crops, rotational grazing, and nutrient management, while others are newer to the field and eager to build confidence as trusted resources for farmers and landowners. Together, they represent thousands of acres of farmland and a broad network of partners across Illinois.

SHLP trainees participate in a number of field visits throughout the training to hone their skills in soil health management.
A common theme among participants is a desire to better connect soil health science with real-world decision-making. Many are interested in strengthening their technical knowledge. Others hope to better understand the economics of soil health practices and how to effectively communicate their value to farmers, landowners, and communities.
The cohort is also eager to learn from one another. Participants cited the opportunity to travel across Illinois, visit different farming systems, and build relationships with peers as some of the most exciting aspects of the program. By bringing together people with different backgrounds, experiences, and areas of expertise, SHLP creates opportunities for meaningful conversations and shared learning that extend well beyond the classroom.
