With over 23 million acres of cropland available for the implementation of practices capable of increasing soil carbon and storage such as planting cover crops and reducing tillage, the opportunity for Illinois farmers to offer immediate, scalable solutions to climate change is immense. ISAP’s “Carbon Farming in Illinois” fact sheet introduces farmers to financial opportunities available for implementing practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, summarizing minimum requirements and payments from traditional financial assistance programs and market-based approaches.

Cover Crops Create Resilient Farms

Dave Schluckebier, a Montgomery and Bond County Illinois farmer, got his start with cover crops about ten years ago. He first got started with cereal rye cover crops through an EQIP program through the NRCS and has seen a lot of benefit for his farm. Dave recently enrolled 645 acres into IDOA’s “Cover Crops Premium Discount Program.” He shared his perspectives in a recent interview. Click below to watch his interview.

SHP Releases Business Case on Benefits of Cover Crops in Enhancing
Nutrient Management Strategy

The Soil Health Partnership (SHP) recently released a business case featuring SHP farmers Roger and Wesley Zylstra, whose on-farm research is evaluating incorporation of cover crops into their nutrient management strategy. The business case details how they adapted their management system to meet soil health, yield and economic goals.
