SUMMARY:Cultivating Commitment: Using Collective Action and Motivational Strategies for Persistent Conservation in the Western Lake Erie Basin with Heather Craska
DESCRIPTION:Addressing water quality challenges and Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Western Lake Erie Basin is fundamentally a collective action problem. While temporary financial incentives can encourage individual farmers to try a practice\, this often results in fragmented adoption scattered across the landscape rather than the coordinated\, watershed-scale coverage required for meaningful ecological impact. \nApproaching Year 4 of The Pilot Watershed Project\, our longitudinal research and social network analysis examine how program elements\, such as annual research feedback from partner scientists\, peer-to-peer networks\, and systematic barrier reduction\, build broader community coordination and foster long-term behavioral persistence. This session will explore findings from the watershed and discuss implications for scaling these strategies to establish local environments where producers remain motivated to maintain conservation practices after financial incentives end.

SUMMARY:Solar and Farmland: Navigating Local Land Use\, Conservation\, and Farm Economics
DESCRIPTION:As solar energy development continues to grow across Illinois\, agrivoltaics is being explored as a way to balance renewable energy production\, diversify income streams\, and conserve farmland. Agrivoltaics is a developing field exploring how to integrate solar energy production alongside agricultural production. New projects are prompting community leaders to consider the potential benefits and tradeoffs of agrivoltaics.   \nExplore trends and research around solar development and farmland conservation in this free webinar that covers:   \nHow solar energy development is affecting local land use\, including solar land leases\, the rate of farmland conversion to solar development\, and an overview of the Agricultural Impact Mitigation Agreement process required in Illinois that ensures land developed for solar is restored to pre-construction conditions. \nAmerican Farmland Trust’s Smart Solar initiative\, which brings solar developers\, landowners\, farmers\, community organizations\, and policymakers together to advance policies and programs that support renewable energy adoption while strengthening farm viability and protecting natural resources. \nAn analysis of the cost and benefits of row crops and solar panels from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute for Sustainability\, Energy\, and Environment Sustainability Colocating Agricultural and Photovoltaic Electricity Systems project.
