SUMMARY:Economic Impacts of Farmland Protection in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin is projected to lose over 515\,200 acres of farmland by 2040\, with the most conversion happening on the country’s best and most productive farmland. \nAgricultural conservation easements are important in protecting our state’s most vulnerable farmland while preserving farm legacy\, making land more affordable for new and beginning farmers\, and creating economic opportunities for Wisconsin’s rural communities. \nTo learn how agricultural conservation easements create economic growth and impact farm families\, join the Wisconsin Farmland Protection Partnership and agricultural economists Dr. Becca Jablonski and Dr. Allie Bauman for Economic Impacts of Farmland Protection in Wisconsin. \nDate: Tuesday\, November 12\nTime: 11:00am-12:30pm CT\nRegistration: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEqc-uurTItHdQqRbGK1_5EQrYG6cJIacny.

SUMMARY:Efficient Cover Crop Seed Application Using Drones
DESCRIPTION:Mark Kingland resides in Winnebago County\, Iowa with his wife on a 120-year family farm\, where his father was once farming with horses and picking corn by hand\, and now sees practices marked by high-tech monitors and drones. Mark started planting cover crops in 2023 on 190 acres of his farmland and purchased a drone to do the planting. He also uses the drone to apply fungicide for its accuracy and ability to map and record data. In 2024 he planted 1000 acres of cover crops as well as applied fungicide on 1700 acres between his own acres and custom work. \nJoin Mark in this September shared learning call where he will talk about the versatility of drones in agriculture and how he uses them for cover crop seed application. Mark will be walking through the entire process of handling cover crop seed\, filling\, flying and landing the drone – focusing on the key to acre coverage\, an efficient cycle time\, getting the drone back in the air as soon as you can.

SUMMARY:Trees for Bucks\, Birds\, & Bees: Agroforestry for Conservation & Recreation
DESCRIPTION:Join Savanna Institute and the University of Illinois Extension for a full-day event focused on how planting trees can increase pollinators\, wildlife\, and opportunities for recreation on farmlands. Topics covered will include: choosing the right trees and shrubs to meet your conservation goals\, current research on the benefits of adding habitat\, and ways to enhance tree planting for hunting and other recreation. You’ll also have the chance to connect with fellow attendees\, as well as hunting and conservation experts. \nThe Savanna Institute Illinois Demonstration Farms grow on the unceded lands of the Peoria\, Kaskaskia\, Piankashaw\, Wea\, Miami\, Mascoutin\, Odawa\, Sauk\, Meskwaki\, Kickapoo\, Potawatomi\, Ojibwe\, and Chickasaw peoples. The soil we work with and the nourishment it provides are rich only because of generations of knowledge\, wisdom\, and care. This land continues to carry stories\, fight for survival and identity\, and celebrations of resilience and joy. It is our obligation as agroforesters not only to acknowledge this past\, but actively support\, listen to\, and amplify the rights and demands of Indigenous communities\, now and into the future.
