SUMMARY:Creating Successful Water Quality Programs and Policies
DESCRIPTION:Gain insight into what makes water quality programs and policies sustainable to better address nonpoint agricultural nutrient pollution. \nThe fifth session of the 2026 season of the Soil and Water Conservation Society’s (SWCS) webinar series “Conservation Voices: Strategies for Conservation Professionals Shaping the Future.” \nResearch shows that agency staff play a critical role in turning water quality policy into effective programs and practices. In this webinar\, Bonnie Keeler (Water Resources Center\, University of Minnesota) shares key insights from interviews with agency staff who helped implement six nutrient reduction programs in Minnesota\, Wisconsin\, and Illinois. \nDrawing on her and her colleagues’ research\, published in the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation\, Keeler highlights what agency staff had to say about the partnerships\, tools\, strategies\, and community buy-in it took to put policy design into practice and how their programs might be adapted for use in other US states. \nAttendees will gain insight into what makes water quality programs and policies sustainable so that states can better address nonpoint agricultural nutrient pollution.

SUMMARY:From Metrics to Farmer Mindsets: A Discussion on Key Findings from JSWC’s Soil Health Issue
DESCRIPTION:Soil health is shaped by a dynamic interaction of physical\, chemical\, and biological components. Together\, these interactions can support agricultural productivity\, strengthen soil ecosystems\, and reduce the environmental impacts of farming. Exploring how these factors work together and what motivates producers to adopt soil health practices is the focus of the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation’s (JSWC) special issue on Soil Health and Conservation. \nIn this webinar\, two researchers featured in the special issue share insights from their work. Dr. Dianna Bagnall and colleagues looked at how management practices affected soil health measurements across seven cotton-producing regions in the southern United States and considered. They also consider how soil health data can be contextualized to guide region-and soil-specific goals.

SUMMARY:Rooted in Resilience Learning Circle
DESCRIPTION:American Farmland Trust and Wonder Farm Earth invite you to join them for a full day learning circle to gather in community with farmers and landowners for discussions on farm viability\, soil health\, food systems\, extreme weather\, business and social challenges\, and farmer wellness. Jennifer Viktora-Cuomo\, of Wonder Farm Earth\, is a diversified vegetable grower and innovative farmer and business owner. Jennifer will support the learning circle discussion and host a tour of her farm. This event is great for new/beginning and farmers of all ages and experience.\n\nWhat is a learning circle? AFT Learning Circles are intentional spaces for folks in agriculture\, designed to cultivate a sense of community and peer-to-peer learning by fostering meaningful discussion amongst those who attend. Rooted in decentering hierarchy\, these non-lecture conversations are facilitated so everyone has time and space to share at their own level of comfort and learn from each other. We will be following the cultural norms outlined in this guidance document\, https://tinyurl.com/2k2xen8r . We invite you to review them at your convenience before your arrival.

SUMMARY:Rooted & Rising: Cultivating Community Among Women Landowners
DESCRIPTION:Are you a woman who owns farmland? Whether you are certified organic\, in the process of transitioning\, or simply curious about ecological practices\, this event is for you. \nJoin The Land Connection for a special networking event built for women landowners! This is your space to connect with a powerful community of women who share your values and your commitment to the soil. The decisions you make for your land send ripples through our food system\, our soil\, and our communities. \nThis event will open conversations about the tools and pathways that support you in your stewardship\, ensuring the long-term health and legacy of your land. In addition to discussing organic certification\, we’re pleased to have The Land Conservancy of McHenry County with us. They’ll be available throughout the event to answer any questions you have about conservation easements and how these tools can preserve farmland for generations to come.  Alongside these resources\, participants will learn about the peer-to-peer support opportunities available through the IDEA Farm Network\, Illinois Women in Conservation (ILWiC)\, and the USDA’s Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).

SUMMARY:Rooted Resilience: How Cover Crops Nourish Health and Ease Hunger
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this session will first examine the connection between agriculture\, nutrition\, and family well-being. What is food insecurity? Is it the same as nutrition insecurity? How can these two things affect a family’s overall health? These questions and more will be discussed. Participants will then shift gears to discuss a real-world way to enhance soil health and family well-being in their own backyard. In this practical portion of the workshop\, attendees will learn how to plant\, grow\, and terminate a three-way summer cover crop mix of sunflower\, cowpea\, and pearl millet as a low-stress\, pollinator and bird-friendly alternative to an intense summer vegetable garden.
